Saturday 22 October, 11am – 7pm
The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is closing for redevelopment. This is an exciting phase in the Gallery’s history and we invite you and your guests to join us for our Closing Party to celebrate Glynn Vivian’s past, present and future. The day will be packed with the best of the Glynn Vivian activity, from workshops, films, music and, of course, the Gallery’s outstanding art and ceramics collection.
Drop-in family workshops will run all day from 11am, including Bread & Buttons, a unique craft workshop where you can leave good luck messages to the Glynn Vivian and share a slice of cake. We have drumming and poetry from Africa, Bangladesh and the Middle East as well as a sale in our popular Art Bookshop. A recently commissioned Glynn Vivian film by contemporary artist David Cushway will be on screen throughout the day in Room 1. This unique film Last Supper at the Glynn Vivian shows visitors talking about their favourite object from the ceramics collection in insightful, tender and often humorous ways. Over the past two years, the gallery has played host to the Free:30 Sessions, showcasing local and national bands such as Sweet Baboo and Cate Le Bon. From 3.30pm, the gallery will be filled with the sounds of Swansea bands Andy Jones Duo, Jemma Krysa, Last Tuesday Society and our headliners, the bizarrley titled Barrie Hole’s Hitlist presents…ROFL Harris & The Canyoutellwhatitisyets, playing a range of familiar songs in their own unique style. As always, all the events will be free, with refreshments available from 5-7pm. It promises to be a fun-packed day with plenty of unexpected surprises.
11am – 4pm Party Bunting! Drop-in art and craft workshop for families and children of all ages and abilities. As part of this special celebration of Swansea’s Glynn Vivian art Gallery, we are asking you to help us create some fantastic party bunting. Taking inspiration from something in the gallery, use paint, fabric, material or collage to help create a unique piece of artwork in our free family drop in arts and craft workshop. You can write a poem or a story, recreate an artwork, make a rubbing or sketch, as long as your bunting has been inspired by an artwork on display, the gallery architecture, a memory or event you have experienced at Glynn Vivian. Artists Arwen Roberts, Mary Hayman and Lucy Lilley will be on hand to offer help and assistance to help you make a collective piece of artwork for our visitors to enjoy. The bunting will then be on display in the Atrium throughout the day for all our visitors to see. Children under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult. Need no to book, everyone welcome. For more information call the Gallery reception on 01792 516900.
