Join us this Friday 10 February as we invite Welsh Artist of the Year 2011, Paul Emmanuel, to discuss his recent work and forthcoming projects.

This free event is part of the gallery’s offsite activities and will take place at 1pm at the YMCA on the Kingsway, everyone welcome.

Paul Emmanuel won the ‘Welsh Artist of the Year Award 2011’ for his unique Fleece Painting series, first exhibited at Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen.

Paul first had the idea for fleece painting while walking around the country lanes and fields surrounding his home and studio at Penycae. Inspired by these natural materials he began painting directly onto locally sourced fleece instead of canvas to create his work. Paul groomed and backcombed the wool with oil paint using hairdressing accessories like combs and hairbrushes instead of conventional art brushes to apply the paint.

For the past 3 years Paul has also been working on a project originated and curated by Karen MacKinnon for Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Let’s see what happens… This is an ongoing exchange of ideas between six artists, four in Wales and two in China which will result in a major exhibition in 2014. The exhibition also includes Tim Davies, Owen Griffiths, Maleonn Ma, Fern Thomas, and Zeng Huanguang and is funded by British Council, Wales Arts International, Arts Council of Wales and Swansea Metropolitan University.
